Gary John Stemerdink June 6, 1947 to November 25, 2025
Gary Stemerdink passed away at Hamilton General Hospital on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife Diane (Williams), his children Jennifer (Michael), Peter (Vi), and Sonya (Karl); and his grandchildren Matthew, Sean, Sarah, Brodie, Libby, Camille, Edwin, Nia, and Braeden, who affectionately called him “Duke,” a name that always brought a smile to his face.
Born in Winterswijk, The Netherlands, on June 6, 1947, Gary came to Canada with his family aboard the S.S. Ryndam in 1952. They settled in Kitchener, where Gary met his lifelong friend Bob Hughes. Bob and his wife Hilary became family to Gary and Diane, sharing countless New Year’s celebrations together over the decades, among many other celebrations.
Gary spent his career in the Cable TV industry, working in Kitchener, Mississauga, and Toronto before running his own cable system, Black Creek TV, until retirement.
Gary had a deep love for the outdoors. He treasured canoe trips with family and friends and looked forward to golf trips with the guys. After retiring to Lorraine Bay, Gary enjoyed every visit with loved ones and welcomed new friendships along the way. He took pride in building his own canoe, shared his craftsmanship through beautiful wood carvings, and became famous among family and friends for his smoked salmon—a treat everyone raved about.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Gary’s life at Bethel United Church, 1742 Third Concession Rd., Port Colborne, on Saturday, December 6. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m., and a time of fellowship and refreshments. Arrangements entrusted to DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME 135 Clarence St. Port Colborne.
Cremation has taken place; interment will follow at a later date.
In memory of Gary, donations may be made to Bethel United Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
